The Key Competencies

These are the capabilities people need in order to live, work and contribute as active members of a community.
The New Zealand Curriculum identifies five key competencies as:
- Participating and Contributing
- Using Language, symbols and texts
We believe these competencies are shaped over time by interactions with people, places, ideas and things. At MBS we will endeavour to develop these competencies through the ‘Habits of Mind’ (Art Costa):
A Habit of Mind means having a disposition toward behaving intelligently when confronted with a challenge, issue or problem; the answer to which is not immediately known.
We see the correlation between developing the Key competencies and the infusing of the Habits of Mind into our learning culture as an effective way to enhance our learning and teaching strategies.
Managing Self - Persistence, Taking responsible risks, Remaining open to continuous learning, Managing impulsivity.
Relating to Others - Listening and understanding with empathy, Finding humour, Thinking Interdependently.
Using Language, Symbols and Text - Striving for accuracy, Gathering data through all the senses, Thinking and communicating with clarity and precision.
Thinking - Questioning and problem solving, Metagognition, Creating, Imagining and Innovating, Flexibility in thinking.
Participating and Contributing - Applying past knowledge to new situations, Responding with wonderment and awe.
